Vartu for iPhone · last updated September 2026

The short version

Vartu keeps your financial records in a single file on your iPhone. There is no account to create, no server holding your data, and nothing to sign in to. We cannot see your transactions, your balances or your holdings, because they never reach us.

What the app stores, and where

Everything you enter or import — accounts, transactions, categories, tags, trades, holdings, prices, rules and settings — is stored in a database inside the app's own folder on your device. It is included in your iPhone's encrypted backup if you make one, and it is removed when you delete the app.

The database is protected by your device passcode, and the app can be locked behind Face ID or Touch ID from Settings. A price-provider key, if you add one, is kept in the iOS keychain rather than in the database, so it is never part of a backup or an export.

What leaves your device, and only then

Five things, all of which you can avoid entirely:

  1. Price lookups. If you add an API key for a price provider (Twelve Data, Finnhub or Alpha Vantage), the app asks that provider for prices using the ticker symbols you hold. The provider therefore learns which symbols are requested and your IP address. No amounts, quantities, account names or personal details are sent. Without a key, no price request is ever made.
  2. Company logos. Off by default. If you switch logos on, the app asks a logo service for an image by ticker symbol. The same disclosure applies: symbols and IP address, nothing else. Switching logos off stops it and deletes the cached images.
  3. House prices. Off unless you switch it on for a property. The app then asks HM Land Registry's public UK House Price Index for the index of the region you picked, month by month. Only the region and the month are sent — never the price you paid, the address, or anything else about you — plus your IP address.
  4. iCloud backups. Off unless you switch them on. Backup copies are then written to your own iCloud Drive, which is Apple's service under your Apple Account; we have no access to it.
  5. Purchases. Subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple. The app asks the device whether a valid subscription exists; payment details never pass through the app, and we receive no personal information from Apple beyond anonymous sales reports.

That is the complete list. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no advertising identifier, no tracking, and no third-party code that collects anything.

Siri, Shortcuts and assistants

Answers for Siri and Shortcuts are worked out on the phone. If you use the option that lets an assistant on your own computer read a summary of your figures, that summary is a file you create and move yourself; the app does not send it anywhere.

Referral links

Some parts of the app link to brokers, banks and cashback services. Where a link is a referral link it is labelled as one, and the developer may receive a bonus if you open an account through it. The links open in Safari, and the app does not record whether you tapped one — there is no click tracking of any kind.

Files you share

Backups and CSV exports are written into the app's folder and stay there until you delete them or share them yourself. When you share one, iOS decides where it goes; the app is not involved.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.

Your rights

Because your data never leaves your device, requests to access, correct or delete it are answered by the app itself: everything is editable, and deleting the app deletes all of it. A full export is always available so you can take your records elsewhere, including without a subscription.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published here and the date above updated. A change that affects what leaves your device will also be described in the app's release notes.
